107 - Lunch - Cantonese Style

If the drive up to Richmond Hill doesn't discourage you from getting to some of the finest Cantonese style dim sum in the GTA, then you're in for a lunch-time treat.

The Golden Court Abalone Restaurant is a spacious, gracious affair with lucky red splashed about the decidedly upscale interior. Unlike many downtown Chinatown venues, this more dressed-up cousin doesn't offer roving carts full of steaming dumplings and other intriguing goodies. Large menus, however, allow you to pencil in your order, with items coming from the kitchen in their piping hot splendour as soon as they're prepared.

Tried and true favourites such siu mai, or pork and mushroom dumplings, arrive at your table wrapped to look like little pouches with bright orange fish roe dappled on top.

Barbecue pork buns or char siu bao are delivered in a bamboo steamer in all of their fluffy, barbecued sweetness. There's also the savoury, slippery and wonderful cheong fan or rice noodle roll that is expertly made at the Golden Court and served with a soy-based dipping sauce.

If it's seafood you're after, the har gao or shrimp dumplings are a perennial favourite. For the more adventurous, there's fung jao or spiced steamed chicken feet.

Pots of hot, strong green tea are always on hand to sip with your feast, but if you have a little room left, the egg custard tart is one sweet ending you won't want to miss. Akin to a French custard tart, the Chinese version is a little less sweet, served warm with firm custard and flaky pastry that goes down a treat. After all, who doesn't like a good ending?
