111 - Exotic Thai Tastes
By Mary Luz Mejia
You might not think of Oakville as a hotbed of tantalizing Thai cuisine, but thanks to Thai, Satay and More, you'll be getting more than your palate bargained for at this lovely, authentic restaurant. Owned and operated by the Butrsingkorn family, the restaurant boasts Thai chefs who have brought with them their regional specialties.
One of the most wonderful dishes on the menu is Haw Mok Pla -- steamed fish in custard. Banana leaves are fashioned into perfect little enviro-friendly cups and filled with white fish fillet pieces (usually haddock), red curry paste, fish sauce, kaffir lime leaves, Thai basil and coconut milk before being steamed to perfection.
Vanita Butrsingkorn, the daughter in this culinary family, says that the Thai red curry paste is the most flavourful, which is evident in the Haw Mok Pla. The result is a velvety, savoury dish with a lingering lemongrass hit ideal for those looking for something new in their Thai dish repertoire.
Of course this restaurant also does the tried and true tiger shrimp satay on bamboo skewers, as well as the venerable pad-thai. But if you're looking for something different, this is the place to try whole steamed fish or any of the other, authentically Thai treasures.
To finish off, don't forget to order some mango and sticky rice. Short grain glutinous rice is cooked in sweetened coconut milk and coconut pieces before it gets a sprinkling of sesame seeds and a side of succulent mango. It's the perfect way to cap off an inspired and beautifully presented meal.
