207 - Goan Groceries for the Worldly Cook

By Mary Luz Mejia

For those lucky enough to have explored India, you’ll know that Goa is a place of immense beauty and breath-taking landscapes. If you’ve ever had the good fortune of eating there, you’ll also know that the food in Goa is as wonderful and generous as the Arabian Sea hugging its coastline. For those of us with more modest travel budgets, Mississauga’s North Star Fisheries might help satiate the travel bug, if only one meal at a time.

The retail shop is your one-stop destination for all Goan food products. From Bombay Duck (actually a small, thin Indian fish called a lizardfish), various other frozen fish, to spice blends and sweets, you’ll be cooking up a Goan feast in no time. Looking for pomfret fish to fry up with a side of channa (chick peas)? No problem. How about some king crab or shrimp from India for a little curry with some fragrant basmati rice? Consider it done. And, if you’re pressed for time, the fine folks at North Star Fisheries also offer pre-made Goan masalas (spice blends) for those on the go. These range from the milder ambotik curry to the spicy cafreal masala, which was brought to Goa by Portuguese colonists via Africa. The cafreal is a favourite sauce in which to cook chicken in particular, and includes a blend of cinnamon, chili, coriander and garlic.

If you’re looking to finish the night off right, you’ll need a sweet ending to your savoury meal. Nothing says Goan dessert quite like a slice of bibinca. This cake is comprised of numerous thin layers infused with coconut milk and is prepared using egg yolks, sugar, vanilla and ghee (clarified butter). This treat is slow-baked and moist, and although quite rich, it’s hard to stop at just one piece, so save some room, or walk away without trying one of Goa’s sweetest exports!
