Joy takes a crack at making her own empanadas with Irene Morales at Jumbo Empanadas. These baked pockets are stuffed with savoury fillings like beef and egg, chicken and cheese. Joy also tastes Pastel de Choclo, corn and beef pie and Humitas, corn tamales shaped like a bowtie.
The hosts drop in at Segovia Meats to sample delicious and healthy Santiago Blanco sausage. All of Segovia’s sausages are made on site and have no binders or fillers.
Joy is introduced to Chilean wines with expert Miguel Couttolenc. Her lesson includes a Carmenère, a Cabernet Sauvignon, a Chardonnay and a Sauvignon Blanc.
At the Concord Café, the hosts feast on Chilean comfort foods. The Sopaipilla is a deep-fried pumpkin fritter that can be served with a little salsa or smothered in sweet molasses gravy. There’s also the Mote con Huesillo peach and barley drink and a simple dish of Chilean home-style potatoes.
It’s all capped off with an inspirational performance by Grupo Encuentro who perform a Nueva Canción-style song called Generación.
